ZwickRoell array technology for high resolution in a wide measurement range

The videoXtens 3-320 P and videoXtens 3-320 HP includes three high-resolution cameras. ZwickRoell’s innovative array technology combines the fields of view, creating one large FOV with high resolution. Ideal for specimens with a long initial gauge length or high extension that require accurate measurement. For example, concrete-reinforcing steel specimens, which the videoXtens 3-320 can measure without the need for additional gauge marks due to the naturally occurring ridges.

The only difference between the P and HP variants is the accuracy class.

Typical videoXtens 3-320 P/HP applications

Concrete-reinforcing steel testing to DIN 488, ISO 15630
ISO 6892-1 / ASTM E8 including r-value determination
Testing belts/straps, determination of strain at break
Film test to ISO 527-3, ASTM D638

Concrete-reinforcing steel testing to DIN 488, ISO 15630

  • No specimen markings required: Mark-free measuring with blue contrast light technology.
  • Every specimen counts: Thanks to the strain distribution option, the break is always within the gauge length. No more time-consuming and costly re-testing.
  • Brittle-fracturing specimens: Materials with high break energy and specimens prone to whipping can be tested up to the point of break without causing damage to the extensometer.
  • High measuring range with high resolution.
  • Automatic centering: the extensometer tracks via connection to the crosshead. This results in a larger measuring range and the system is automatically positioned centrally to the gauge length at all times.

ISO 6892-1 / ASTM E8 including r-value determination

  • Meets the requirements for closed loop strain rate control to ISO 6892-1 Method A1 and ASTM E8 Method B. This results in globally reproducible test results and saves on preliminary tests.
  • In addition, the system covers Methods A2 and B according to ISO 6892-1 and Methods C and A according to ASTM E8.
  • No specimen marking: Mark-free measuring with blue contrast light technology.
  • Every specimen counts: Due to the strain distribution option, the break is always within the gauge length. No more time-consuming and costly re-testing.
  • No influence on the specimens: aluminum specimens and metal foils are sensitive to contact, for which the non-contact videoXtens is ideal. It does not influence the material characteristics.
  • Connection to the crosshead ensures that the gauge marks are always automatically centered and that the large measuring range is optimally used.
  • The optional camera for change-in-width measurement, including highly accurate r-value determination, always faces the center of the field of view, and therefore the center of the specimen.
  • Versatile: thanks to its high measuring range and high resolution, the videoXtens 3-320 can also be used for other tests.

Testing belts/straps, determination of strain at break

  • Connection to the crosshead ensures that the gauge marks are always automatically centered and that the large measuring range is optimally used. Although an extremely large amount of material runs out of the specimen grips, the measuring range is not restricted.
  • Because of pattern recognition, specimen markings are not required. The natural texture of the specimen is used.
  • Even if the specimens break with extreme whipping, the videoXtens is not damaged and can be tested until it breaks.
  • Transverse strains are measured using the easily expandable transverse strain software option.
  • Every specimen counts: Thanks to the strain distribution option, the break is always within the gauge length. No more time-consuming and costly re-testing.

Film test to ISO 527-3, ASTM D638

  • Sensitive specimens are not influenced by knife edges since tests are performed without contact.
  • Saving time in the research field: the test re-run and pattern recognition options can be used to subsequently change the gauge length and recalculate the test. This allows, for example, the break to be placed within the gauge length or other measuring lengths/positions to be evaluated.
  • Pattern recognition: Through dotting or stamping, a pattern is quickly placed on the entire specimen.
  • High measuring range with high resolution.
  • Connection to the crosshead ensures that the gauge marks are always automatically centered and that the large measuring range is optimally used. Slipping of the film specimens during the test does not restrict the measurement range and therefore does not have to be taken into account.
  • Versatile: thanks to its high measuring range and high resolution, the videoXtens 3-320 can also be used for other tests.

Advanced functionality: simply activate and see more

The testing software gets more out of the camera images than just the change in distance between two measuring points. These intelligent options simply see more:

Change in width measurement / transverse strain measurement

This option is used for biaxial measurements: One or more transverse strain measurements are recorded at the same time as the longitudinal strain measurement, for example the change in width directly at the edge of the specimen, contact-free and without gauge marks. The number of measuring points can be freely selected. The values are automatically averaged, but can also be evaluated individually.

To measure the change in width and especially to determine the r-value, we recommend the transverse strain hardware option, in which an additional camera is integrated directly into the housing of the videoXtens. This camera is specially designed for the change in width, fulfills accuracy class 0.5 (ISO 9513) and achieves significantly more accurate measured values than the software-only option.

Strain distribution: every specimen counts

A break outside the gauge length causes costs and additional time for specimen preparation and retesting. This can be prevented with the strain distribution option.

During the test, the testing software automatically places the gauge length symmetrically around the break point.

The workaround offered by ISO 6892-1 in Annex I to validate breaks outside the gauge length is also activated effortlessly by our software; calculation and validation according to standard specifications run automatically and in real time. No need to manually measure and recalculate the specimen as was the case before.

2D Digital Image Correlation (DIC)

2D digital image correlation visualizes deformations and strain over the entire visible specimen surface. This software option considerably expands the analysis options of the videoXtens. Activation is very simple, you only need a software license. The live strain measurement and subsequent 2D DIC analysis are performed with the same videoXtens and using the same marker.

A wide range of analysis tools provide different types of information: Gauge lengths, measuring points, virtual strain gauges, cutting lines, vector maps and more. Here you will find detailed information about 2D DIC.

Test Re-Run: re-calculate instead of re-testing

The test re-run function can be used to virtually repeat and recalculate the test with a modified initial gauge length. You save time on specimen preparation and testing and can run different evaluations on one and the same specimen.

During the test, the testing software records the image series. You can later use these to change the size and position of the initial gauge length as required. One click starts the recalculation and all characteristic values are recalculated on the basis of the new gauge length. Each recalculation is displayed separately, making comparisons simple and clear.

2D dot matrix

Up to 100 measuring points can be set and measured in any arrangement or in the form of a grid. In this way, local strains and inhomogeneities of a specimen under load are determined. X and Y coordinates as well as the distances between dots are available as measured values.

The measured values can be easily exported or displayed as channels directly in testXpert. The prerequisite is that all measuring points are applied to a flat specimen surface, as this is a two-dimensional measurement. Typical applications includes tests on components or multiaxial tensile tests.

Flexure test: deflection measurement

The videoXtens offers different options to measure deflection. A measuring plunger is often placed under the specimen for comparability with measurements using sensors or transducers. The measurement displacement during the test is measured by videoXtens using stick-on gauge marks.

Alternatively, it is also possible to measure directly on the specimen edge: either by applying a mark to the flexure specimen or by using a backlight behind the specimen, which makes the lower edge of the specimen visible and measurable for the videoXtens. In addition to the deflection in the test axis, the polynomial approximation of the curvature can also be determined.
