The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur Research Advanced Ultra-Supercritical Technology with ZwickRoell Creep Testers
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT-KGP) is a public technical and research university established by the Government of India in 1951. It is the first of the IITs to be established and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. In 2019, it was awarded the status of Institute of Eminence by the Government of India.
Advanced Ultra-Supercritical Technology (AUSC) is a high-temperature, coal-based power generation system that improves performance while lowering coal consumption and CO2 emissions. One of the institutes chosen to study new materials for the AUSC project is IIT Kharagpur.
Reliable test results with the ZwickRoell
To test the characteristics and behavior of such material, an electro-mechanical creep testing machine Kappa SS-CF is required. IIT Kharagpur purchased four 100kN advanced creep-testing machines from ZwickRoell.
The machines also include High Temperature pull rods, Compact Tension adapters, Load Line Displacement (LLD) gauges, DCPD for crack growth measurement, COD gauges, and 1200 °C furnaces to perform Creep Crack Growth (CCG) tests according to ASTM E1457.
Dr. Rahul Mitra, (Professor, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), commented: “The tests performed with the new ZwickRoell machines are going quite well. The test results are considerably more accurate. Speaking about the machine, Kappa SS-CF is a truly versatile machine to perform tensile, compression, and flexure tests, together with Creep, CCG, LCF, CF, and CFCG tests. The testing machines are running extremely reliably from the outset and offer the customer everything they need – for their current and future requirements.”
Details of the comprehensive ZwickRoell solution:
- Advanced creep tests: The patented electro-mechanical testing machine Kappa SS-CF provides maximum versatility and covers the entire range of creep testing applications. It can also be used for quasi-static tensile, compression, and flexure tests.
- Testing Software: The testXpert III software fully complements the testing machine. It is user-friendly and requires minimal training, thanks to an intuitive & workflow-based interface.
- Customization: Apart from CCG tests as per international standards, IIT Kharagpur also wanted to test its own set of CT specimens. For those requests, ZwickRoell customized the adapters for the non-standard CT specimens.
- Service Support: Starting with a smooth installation that requires no additional power or cooling water, replacement parts are available if required, as well as specialized consultation.
