Customized Kappa 250 DS with a four-furnace carousel for Sandvik’s R&D center in Sweden

Sandvik is a high-tech and global engineering group specializing in mining and rock excavation, metal-cutting and materials technology, with its headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. ZwickRoell recently supplied a customized universal testing machine for testing tubes at high temperature to Sandvik’s R&D center ‘Sandvik Materials Technology’ in Sandviken, Sweden. This division is mainly involved in developing and producing high-performance materials for the energy sector.

Sandvik uses its new high-temperature testing machine for tensile tests according to EN ISO 6892-2, ASTM E21 and MC1212 on metallic tube specimens and threaded-head specimens over a wide temperature range. Pretests at ZwickRoell’s premises proved that the necessary heating and cooling rates (before and after each test) can be attained. ZwickRoell engineers accordingly designed a four-furnace carousel in order to achieve the required throughput of 20 specimens per 8-hour working day. With the sophisticated temperature controller, temperatures from 80°C to 900°C are reliably maintained within the required temperature tolerances of ISO 6892-2 and ASTM E21.

Specimens of various lengths and dimensions, including tubes 800 mm in length, are gripped outside the furnace using hydraulic grips. This carousel solution gives Sandvik the necessary flexibility to test different specimen geometries. This also represents a challenge for the strain measurement device, with initial gauge lengths ranging up to 100 mm and large elongations expected. The laserXtens 2-120 HP/TZ was the obvious choice, as this non-contact system allows all specimen shapes to be tested without specimen marking according to ISO 9513 accuracy class 0.5.
Summing up, ZwickRoell’s engineers have made a great effort to meet the customer’s specific requirements and have ultimately developed the perfect technical solution for Sandvik. Even the reduction in testing system height necessitated by the limited space available in Sandvik’s lab was achieved.
