Battery Abuse Testing and Multiphysics Testing
ZwickRoell universal testing machine combined with extreme event test chamber from Weiss Technik
Battery abuse tests are destructive safety tests for lithium-ion batteries.
How does a battery react when it is suddenly subjected to extreme conditions? Does it remain safe and functional under extreme mechanical loads or will it catch fire? How does a battery behave during the charge and discharge cycle? Battery abuse tests and multiphysics tests require extensive safety measures and are extremely complex and critical.
ZwickRoell and Weiss Technik together present, for the very first time, a testing machine with an integrated extreme event test chamber for safe and reproducible battery abuse tests on lithium-ion batteries.
What is battery abuse testing?
Multiphysics and battery abuse testing performed on lithium-ion batteries to test their behavior under normal use as well as under extreme conditions. Typical tests include thermal overheating, mechanical loads such as crushing or impact, and electrical overload caused by short circuits. Batteries are exposed to high temperatures, pressure or strong vibrations to determine their safety limits. The tests are carried out under strict safety precautions in specialized laboratories in order to minimize risks such as fires or explosions. These tests are complex and serve to ensure the robustness and safety of the batteries in everyday use.
Challenges and testing solutions for battery abuse tests
With previous methods for battery abuse tests, it is difficult to determine the exact and precise mechanical load that triggers the damage. Furthermore, test equipment and measurement technology are subjected to heavy loads during these tests and usually have to be frequently replaced.
ZwickRoell and Weiss Technik showcase, for the first time, an integrated testing solution for efficient and safe testing of battery systems under extreme conditions.
They combined a ZwickRoell AllroundLine series universal testing machine and an extreme event safety test chamber from Weiss Technik. This solution supports highly accurate and reproducible abuse tests on lithium-ion batteries.
The newly developed ExtremeEvent test chamber with tertiary explosion protection is specially designed for demanding tests in which extreme events such as high pressure and heat release or gas explosion regularly occur in an explosive atmosphere. It offers the highest level of safety and reliability. Your ideal partner for hydrogen testing, arc fault testing and battery abuse tests.
Additional applications for this machine concept
It goes without saying that this machine concept is also suitable for other multiphysical battery tests thanks to its high level of safety and precision and the universal design of the test chamber. These include, for example, cell characterization tests and battery swelling tests. In these, cells are charged and discharged under specific pressure and at a specific temperature so that their performance, longevity and swelling behavior can be analyzed. ZwickRoell also offers a comprehensive portfolio of test fixtures that can be used in the chamber.
Comprehensive know-how and experience in materials testing, access to all high-precision testing machines and the complete accessories portfolio in our ZwickRoell Battery Test Center are available for your application technology consultation.
